It may sound surprising, but there’s no reason why a garden can’t work just as well indoors as outside.
This garden was designed for the London showrooms of Rooms Outdoor, the UK’s leading producer of bespoke garden studios. To enhance and show off the different studio spaces in the showroom, we created an indoor garden. A green ‘living wall’ bursting with lush ferns helps to bring the outdoors indoors, creating a mellow ambience that is both energising and relaxing. Throughout the space we used a combination of plants that thrive in varied light conditions – including a handsome lemon tree in ‘Lava’ planter and house plants – together with artificial plants to add drama and scale – for example a ‘birch tree’ using real birch trunks and ‘box hedging’ on the walls. Precision decking blends with contemporary limestone paving and smooth pebbles – all designed to be comfy on the bare feet. The oversized ‘pebbles/rocks’ have the pleasing appearance of natural forms, or perhaps a Barbara Hepworth – in fact they are super-comfy cushions, made from innovative waterproofed felted wool fabric technology. After dark, atmospheric lighting transforms the space – and a fireplace provides a point of calm and meditation – ideal for gazing into a log fire or toasting marshmallows. The overall effect is a sophisticated contemporary space that is peaceful, energising and enjoyable at any time of year – whatever the weather.
